Can this shirt be saved?

Vogue 8534 with an accidental cut

Yes, folks, after posting last night about the conclusion of the Mondo shirt, I started sewing Vogue 8534. and then I accidentally cut into the front of the fabric. I quickly zigzagged it up, but I think it's going to bother me. I don't have enough fabric to cut another piece. I bought this fabric at Joann's in March and who knows if they will still have it. It feels almost like double knit from Lucy's, but a quick plow through the stash this morning reveals that it's not the Lucy's fabric.

Options:
  • Check out Joann's on Thursday (I'll be there anyway for a lunchtime dash for the start of the Butterick and Vogue patterns sale); maybe they still have the fabric
  • I could make the shirt short sleeved; I have enough to cut out that front piece again, but short sleeved
  • Leave it like it is and call it a design feature
  • Add a similar zig zagged line to the left side as well and pretend it's some kind of matching funky dart.
There's always this idea, but I don't think so:

What would you do??

  1. First let me say I loved the "Mondo" t-shirt. Turned out great and awesome job on matching the stripes. If you have time and you really want the sleeves long, I would try to find the same fabric and purchase enough to recut the sleeves. I kind of think you need the long sleeves to balance out the bow. If they don't have more fabric, I would probably match with a seam on the opposite side. Good luck with your decision. The blouse looks like it feels wonderful and is a super color.

  2. I'd take option 4 and wear it with pride.

  3. Option 4 might work if you tried to rework the bow/ends. I'd try pinning them narrower and a bit shorter but still long enough to cover the boo boo.

You said you have enough to recut witha short sleeve. You could cut the longer sleeve length off the bad bodice and intentionally put a seam there to make it long sleeved. Obviously you'd have to do it to the other side. A 1/4" serger seam won't take that much length off.

Last option is to look for more fabric.

  4. Buy more fabric! That would annoy me so much and I'd be mad at myself for putting the cut there in the first place and I probably wouldn't wear it.

  5. I would try to find more fabric. If it's their Sew Classic line, there's a high chance that it's still available. Otherwise, option 4 looks good, too. Good luck!

  6. Since you're either going to re-cut it or tack the bows over it, I'd first do a matching zigzag on the other side and see how it goes. It probably would look like a matching dart. You still might hate it, but it won't foreclose your other options (unless you had considered an asymmetry in the bow--one side tacked up and the other hanging down, which might actually look cool).

  7. I'd just go with it. Asymmetry is the name of the game.
