Simplicity 2455 view B in progress

Ok, so this is the dress I thought might look too "scrubs" like because of the color. I'm 5 hours into it and here's where we stand:Simplicity 2455 view B in progress

I need to finish ripping out the hem and sewing it in correctly...iron the dress and hope that takes care of some of the funkiness of the round collar (otherwise I will hand sew down the collar facing, which right now is machine sewn in...sew a snap into the belt and then a fake out button to the front of the belt, and slipstitch the belt.

So quite a distance to go, but so far so good...I have loved, hated then loved this dress again, mainly because of the fear of a scrubs look.

I am just a sucker for round collar facings like that, but they are not easy.
Also that belt was a struggle--I had to interface both the belt and belt facing to keep the belt facing from stretching while sewing it onto the stable belt section.
But the good part about having this somewhat stretchy mystery fabric (poly rayon lycra blend, maybe? It's not knit) was that I didn't need to put in the side zipper!

Getting the pleats to be the same size was challenging too--I used my favorite pleat as a guide for how much to pleat the other side...

I don't think I will continue working on the dress tonight. Folks have been blogging bout ending their summer sewing, and even I must acknowledge the number of dress-wearing weeks left is dwindling. I want to make New Look 6909, and maybe an oldie-but-goodie Simplicity dress, and maybe a McCall's Crafty dress, and that will be it for the summer dressmaking season. Sigh. I can also tweak some of the dresses I've made so far this year.

Now I think it's time to walk and get some ice cream, what do you think??

  1. Cute dress! I wear dresses all year! Even in the winter, albeit with tights & boots. I'll change the colors and fabric weight to make it work. This looks like a great January dress, with a long sleeved tank underneath...cute!

  3. Only a few weeks of dress weather? I can't even imagine. I can see this one layered with some kind of longsleeve underneath, too...

  4. I really like the style of this dress. The pleats at the neckline look perfect and are a nice detail. I also agree with everyone else that a long sleeve tee, possibly in some kind of print that compliments the dress color, would be great for fall/winter dressing too!
